Anticipation was high on Honker Court as fans piled in to see the fourth annual staff vs students basketball game on Thursday, March 7.
Both offenses were sluggish to start, as both teams relied on turnovers and aggressive defense. Seniors Jace Brazeal and Kaden Greenfield paced the senior offense, while the big three of Jaime Anderson, Christopher Rose and Tonya Stratton paced the staff.
After holding a 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, the staff offense woke up, as they outscored the senior class 16-6 to take a 28-16 lead into halftime. The seniors couldn’t convert any shots from the three-point line and the staff was able to get out in transition for many of their baskets.
The seniors got their first three point shot to fall towards the end of the third quarter, as Livy Hamrick made one from the corner. The staff continued their balanced scoring attack as they carried a 40-25 lead into the fourth quarter.
The seniors clamped down on defense in the fourth, holding the staff to just six points, as Brazeal and Greenfield continued to pace the senior offense, getting out on the fast break and assisting their teammates getting buckets. The staff claimed the 46-39 victory, but as a bonus there was a fifth quarter played and the seniors made their comeback forcing turnovers and contested jump shots and pulled within two, after a three pointer from Greenfield with 10 seconds to play. The seniors tried to steal the ensuing inbounds pass, but were unsuccessful and couldn’t intentionally foul in time and the staff escaped with a 54-52 victory.
The seniors didn’t have an answer for the staff’s balanced scoring, in particular Stratton and Anderson, who led the staff in scoring with 12, while Rose added 10. Eight different staff members recorded a point in this contest. For the seniors, Brazeal led the way with 17 points, while Greenfield had 16. Nolan Petersen and Brette Graham contributed with five and four points respectively.
For the staff, it was their third win in four years and avenged their loss from last year, when they lost on a buzzer beating three pointer from then senior Cotter Shullanberger.
